Toothpaste Update
If you haven't already, check out the original "Toothpaste" post.
I have been using the toothpaste for just about a month now. I have pretty much adjusted to the taste and texture of the paste. I want to add in some more peppermint oil next time I make it, because I want a stronger flavor. My teeth and gums still feel sparkly and clean.
Aaaaannnnnnnddd.....
I went to the dentist for a checkup. I am cavity free, which is great, but there is more good news! When I went for my check-up a year ago, they found a teeny tiny cavity. I asked them NOT to drill-n-fill it, just as a personal experiment. I had read a little about the body's ability to re-mineralize teeth and I wanted to see if it was true. Now, I don't recommend doing this, of course. I made the decision because I have exceptionally strong teeth, the cavity was VERY small, and I trust my intuition.
When I went back to the dentist 6 months later (6 months ago), the cavity had morphed into a "slightly sticky spot." Good news!
When I went this time (now, a year after it was first discovered) it was gone! The tooth was totally healthy!!!!
Now, I know the toothpaste didn't fix my tooth. But, I had no new cavities, the existing one healed, my gums bled WAY less than usual when the hygienist scraped around, AND both my medical doctor and my dentist commented on how white my teeth are.
With all those positives, I'm sticking with it!

What fabulous news!! Sounds like you have a winner recipe there. I need to start making ours at home too. My daughter is finally getting more teeth in and we are going to have to start using paste in the near future instead of just brushing with water. The idea of using regular store bought stuff and her swallowing it, kinda freaks me out!
ReplyDeleteoh and btw... I went back to your original post to see the toothpaste recipe and followed the link to primal toad... hello hottie! I'm not sure if its cuz he's making videos on how to make toothpaste or if he's just super cute. I think its a combo of both! I might just have to start following his blog now ;)
ReplyDelete@LauraHahaha it is DEFINITELY a combination of both!! Let me know how she likes the toothpaste. John hates it, but he isn't too into changes. I'm thinking that since she won't really remember it any other way, it should be cool. So curious to see!
ReplyDeleteI've been looking into this very topic too. About a month ago I started using just plain baking soda for toothpaste. Cool to read, thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteSO SUPER COOL!!
ReplyDeleteWill definitely be trying this... Thanks so much for sharing! Blessings, ~Lisa
ReplyDeleteGlad this worked out for you. I tried a variation of this a while back and it made my teeth very sensitive, plus I just never could get used to the flavor of the baking soda. I'm currently using SeaFresh, which is still commercial but has a shorter ingredient list than most.
ReplyDeleteWell that certainly is amazing. People make homemade toothpastes just to make the most out of what's in the house, and maybe to save money too. It's cool to find out that there's actually a formula that has remedied a cavity.
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome, Jackie! I'm all about homemade alternatives to commercial products, and have dabbled a little here and there with toothpaste, but never found a recipe that I really liked - and certainly not one with such a glaring review/update as yours! :)
ReplyDeleteYou've given me the push to get back on the homemade toothpaste saddle and give it another go. If/when I blog about it, I'll be sure to give you a shout out :)
P.S. Love your site! Following your posts now, and looking forward to reading more!
